ECZEMA

Eczema is basically itchy, irritated skin that occurs when your immune system is working too hard. While we don’t yet know exactly why some people get it and others don’t, we do know that it can be hereditary. It can also be more commonly found in people with allergies and asthma, and where you live can also have an impact.

Triggers to Avoid

If you have eczema, you probably don’t itch all the time. Your irritated skin may come and go, which can make it difficult to understand. Here is a list of common eczema triggers to avoid. You should also keep a journal of other things that make your skin itchy, and avoid scratching which can make eczema worse.

  • Dust
  • Scented soaps and detergents
  • Animal saliva and dander
  • Scratchy clothing fabrics, such as wool
  • Excessive sweating
  • Some household cleaning products
  • Fruit juices
  • A cold, cough, or the flu
  • Hot showers

Treatment Options

If you have an eczema flare-up, try putting a cool, wet cloth on the itchy area to help calm the burning sensation. Some over-the-counter antihistamines and creams can help stop the itch. If you find those things aren’t enough to keep your eczema at bay, make an appointment to see us so we can recommend a stronger version of medicine or other treatments.

At Evans Dermatology we have many methods to help you manage eczema including:

  • Oral medications
  • Creams
  • Light therapy
  • Tests to help identify triggers
